  2. GRAPHICS INTERCHANGE FORMAT (GIF) STANDARD

  7. ORLANDO, FL -- May 28th, 1992, marks the fifth anniversary of
  8. CompuServe's Graphics Interchange Format. The Graphics Interchange
  9. Format, or GIF (pronounced 'jif'), is a data stream structure which
  10. incorporates a graphics image, designed to allow the speedy transfer and
  11. display of images containing up to two hundred and fifty-six colors or
  12. shades of gray, regardless of the computer system using the GIF file.
  13.  
  14. GIF was released by CompuServe on May 28, 1987, to replace its original
  15. monochrome graphics standard, known as RLE (for Run Length Encoding, a
  16. form of file compression). Its features included optimized and
  17. compressed data for transfers via communications channels, which allowed
  18. for the transfer of extensive graphics data at a much greater rate. On
  19. that day, the first collection of images and viewing software appeared
  20. in the Picture Support Forum on CompuServe (now The Graphics Support
  21. Forum).

  23. From that day, the GIF standard has continued to keep pace with the
  24. personal computer industry. In mid-1990, the standard was revised and
  25. enhanced to allow greater flexibility within the image structure, with
  26. 'extensions' to the standard which included internal comments, text that
  27. could be overlaid on the image, and application identifiers. This
  28. standard, GIF89a, was designed to fully support the original GIF87a
  29. format while bringing even more power to the graphics developer and
  30. user.

  32. The immense challenge of constructing suitable programs for encoding and
  33. decoding GIF files from and to any computer was met by inaugurating a
  34. unique experimental group of software developers and artists, known in
  35. The Graphics Forums on CompuServe as the GIF Developers' Group. They
  36. contributed their time and expertise to the construction of programs and
  37. utilities to work with the GIF standard, thereby making GIF available to
  38. many personal and professional computer systems.

  40. The Graphics Interchange Format and GIF images have spread far beyond
  41. just CompuServe:

  43. * Computer users the world over are exchanging files each other's images
  44.   and using GIF images in a wide variety of applications. The GIF
  45.   standard is the de facto graphics standard found on thousands of
  46.   popular hobby bulletin board systems and commercial information
  47.   providers.

  49. * A growing number of commercial software developers are adding GIF
  50.   support to their products, as the tight, lossless compression makes
  51.   the format a useful tool for cross-platform image exchange and
  52.   conversion.

  54. * Government agencies such as the National Aeronautics and Space
  55.   Administration (NASA), and private institutions such as the
  56.   Smithsonian Institution, are using GIF as a method of storing
  57.   irreplaceable graphics data and photographs of artistic and historical
  58.   collections.

  60. As the Graphics Interchange Format enters into its next five years, the
  61. Staff of the Graphics Forums continues to encourage the further
  62. development of this popular and flexible graphics standard. Methods and
  63. procedures are being investigated to allow for greater compression of
  64. images, the support of a greater number of colors, and even its use in
  65. such varied concepts as three-dimensional graphics, desktop publishing,
  66. multimedia, virtual reality and animation.
